Forget the glass ceiling – use the fire escape instead!

Pat Sutton | December 2nd, 2009 - 5:36 am

When, after 8 years, I decided to emerge from the security of a monthly salary I was met with the usual, “Are you sures and are you mads”

Thankfully, I didn’t listenj0443905

I felt that as Marketing Director of a company like Advantage Business Angels I was being held back.
My talent for thinking outside the box was not really required in a, dare I say it, formal, don’t do anything radical, don’t do anything crazy, institution like ABA.
I understood, we had to be seen as reliable, dependable, professional – in other words a bit stuffy, for people to take us seriously but it didn’t help me and my yearning to have my creativity unleashed!

My multi tasking skills are quite good, after all I am a woman, but even the most organised of people would struggle with a seriously demanding Managing Director, (sorry Neil), Magistrate’s duties, mothering duties, grandmothering duties and trying to run a business in my spare time duties.

So I did it – I’m now free – free to follow my dream to be an Internet marketing queen.
And I have just received my first official accolade – I am in the company of some fabulous ladies on The Forbes List of The 30 Women Entrepreneurs to follow on Twitter – I have made my mother so proud and I’m quite proud of myself as well.

I am so excited to be on the Forbes List as Thirty Women Entrepreneurs to follow on Twitter.
I am honoured to be in the company all those inspirational women.

Forbes’ Natalie MacNeil said:

“These business-savvy tweeters are all excited about helping you grow your company, create buzz for your brand and stay inspired.

Twitter has been an incredible tool for connecting with like-minded people from around the world. I am always on the lookout for women entrepreneurs and women in business to follow, connect with and learn from. The following 30 women entrepreneurs have excellent Twitter feeds to follow…..

So what does this mean to me and how can I, as a marketer, profit from this?

We women are not very good at blowing our own trumpet but we have to learn, not only to get a sound out but to play a good tune!j0439239

Here are my 10 tips on what to do when you have public recognition to shout about.

1. Turn your good news into a helpful article or blog, as I have done here.
2. Once you have created your blog, grab the URL and get it out across the web to social networks like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace etc.
3. Post your blog on all your group’s news pages on LinkedIn. If you are not a member and have not joined any groups then why not? (My blog about marketing on LinkedIn coming soon).
4. Add your news to your e-mail signature.
5. Use your news to prove your credibility, for instance when trying to get articles or books published.
6. Add to all your marketing brochures and publications.
7. Include the news in any advertising campaigns.
8. Create a banner that you can pop onto your website.
9. Send your news, together with a story about how you gained recognition, to your local or national newspaper editors.
10. And probably the most important thing to do is to say thank you to the journalist…if you can’t get to her or he directly, write to the editor or better still both!

Think on this…it’s great to feel you are important. The feeling is infectious and once you get the bug it will drive you to strive for even more success. But my tip here is, “What goes around, comes around”.
I believe that if you help others as much as you can then good things will happen to you!
Thank you so much Natalie, I’m truly honoured!

If anyone has any other ideas – love to hear them!

Selling to the taxi driver!

Pat Sutton | November 18th, 2009 - 3:27 pm

You know, one of the easiest things to do on the internet is to assume that people are not being honest and that they are only talking to you because they have something to sell. Who do you think is to blame for that? We are of-course!toytaxibeetlebug_small

Have you noticed on the social networks how many people make a connection and then immediately try to sell you something. I am the first one to admit that that was my tactic when I first started social marketing on the web.

It’s like getting into a Taxi and saying hello to the driver and in your next breath introducing your product to him. If you were that taxi driver, what would you think?

If, however, you have a long drive with him and you allow him to tell you about his family and his gripes and likes. You could chat to him about how busy he has been and you could comment on how clever he is to remember all the obscure places, he will eventually feel connected to you. He will then, more than likely, ask you what it is that you do. You will then have the opportunity to tell him about your business or product. Remember though, it is still not the best time to sell to him until you have told him about yourself. You need him to see you as a normal, kind, human person who he can trust and that he can see as the type of person he would want to buy from. I am not saying that taxi drivers are likely customers but I am sure you know what I mean?

If you really want to find people to buy into your product or business, you must first help them to buy into you. Your online profile should be the best you can possible make it and your picture should show you smiling and looking approachable. It’s important that you do not come over too professional, you should seem to your prospective customer like someone who could be living next door to him.

Your resume is important but remember not all of us have a great academic education, many of us are self taught, as am I, do not be ashamed of that. Many of your prospective customers will, themselves, not have traditional training but some of the best entrepreneurs have started just like that.

Jim Rohn, the founder of Herbalife, as an example, started selling and made a fortune out of health products because of his mother’s enthusiasm for healthy foods not because he had a fantastic academic career.

Put a sandwich board out to drive traffic!

Pat Sutton | November 10th, 2009 - 2:48 pm

The content of your website tells your visitors all about you and your business; it is your shop window. The problem is that if your shop is on a back street and you have no passers by then you need to get people to take a detour down your street! It’s easy, you put a sandwich board out with key phrases to grab their attention?

So what can you do to get people to come to you on the web?

Good blogs and articles will lead people to your site if they are written with good content that includes the important relevant key words.website open

So how does good content and great articles get you traffic? Well, many search engines rely on the keyword and keyword phrases of a site to put it in their results list. If your content contains a good number of keywords and keywords phrases, it may be chosen to be a part of the top listed sites in the search result pages.

But before you think of just plastering your site and articles with all the keywords and keyword phrases you can, remember that the search engine police will notice if you are trying to abuse the system and will most certainly penalise you. You must have good well written articles that incorporate the keywords and keyword phrases properly in their content.

I know it’s difficult as many of you will say that you just don’t have the time to write your own website blogs and articles. But if you can find the time, articles specifically designed for the internet will take some getting used to and a certain amount of expertise to create but it is well worth the effort.

There are writers who have great experience in doing this and charge only a minimal fee for such work. Writers like this can be regarded as experts in this style of writing and can greatly help your website to get that coveted spot in the search engine rankings.

Other than getting your site in the web results page of search engines, they can also provide your site with meaningful articles and content that can impress your website visitors and entice others to view your site. This is the type of thing that makes your website “sticky” and if you set up an RSS feed button on your website they may even subscribe to your articles and the search engines love that!

Of-course, if the mountain won’t come to Mohamed………..I take my website via Articles and Blogs to the mountain.

Articles once written, can be posted across the web to drive traffic back to your website. Sort of like a virtual sandwich board.

Depending on the number of words needed, usually, a two hundred and fifty word article would cost from about $30, (about £20 in English money). This is a small price to pay for having a content rich, well researched and written paper on your website and it is a lot cheaper than a Google Adwords campaign.

It is easy to find a good writer as these days most authors will have blog sites or articles published on websites like EzineArticles.com where you can read some of their work to get an idea of their type of writing. But what is important is that the writer has the knowledge to “write for the search engines” as well.

10 QUESTIONS: DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? By John Assaraf

Pat Sutton | November 9th, 2009 - 3:05 am

Do you have what it takes to be really successful? Have you ever thought about what you must be prepared to endure and do in order to be successful in business or your career?
I think I have been asked at least 5,000 times what it really takes to be successful in business, so I jotted down 10 questions you can use to gauge whether you already have what it takes, or if you need to do a little “work” to get there.
Many years ago I heard Jim Rohn say that you either pay the price of discipline or the price of regret. Discipline weighs ounces… regret weighs tons! With that said, here are 10 questions to ask yourself:
1. Are you disciplined?
2. Do you take rejection personally? What about criticism?
3. Do you bounce back quickly from making errors or failing over and over again?
4. Are you a planner or do you do things by the seat of your pants?emu
5. Are you prepared to take risks? Moderate or Big?
6. Do you stay focused on one thing and one thing only until the result you want is achieved?
7. Do you have the stamina to keep going long after everyone else is tired?
8. Can you delegate well, or are you the only one who can do things right?
9. Do you wait for things to happen or do you aggressively go after what you want?
10. Do you do whatever it takes to achieve your goals or just what’s convenient?

These questions are critical for you to ask yourself in order to get a true picture of your nature and behavior.
What I have found is that successful people are aware of the consequences of not being efficient in these areas, and find other ways, resources or people to manage for them.
Food for thought?
Remember to create a masterpiece!

10 QUESTIONS: DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? By John Assaraf

You can make your life as rich as you want!

Pat Sutton | October 25th, 2009 - 8:18 pm

footprint in snow“Had I but plenty of money, money enough to spare,” wrote Robert Browning.
Money is the greatest attribute of riches.
It is a universal desire, money is the materialization of riches, the stuff that makes the rest possible.
Are you looking for financial security? For retirement, for education or leisure?
Riches are the overflowing abundance of material possessions – houses, cars, boats, furnishings -everything you ever wanted.
For others, riches come in the form of satisfaction and personal independence. Centuries ago, Horace wrote, “By right means, if you can, but by any means, make money.”
Satisfaction comes from accomplishment in employment or attaining goals. It is that feeling of contentment and confidence from a good task well done.
Riches are closely linked with success. And with that comes fame or acknowledgment of position.
Success might be the feeling of well-being from the rewards of good effort. Or the enthusiasm and vitality triggered by recognition. “Success is how well I enjoy the minutes,” said producer Norman Lear.
Throughout history, the people who lived with riches often achieved them by hard work, diligence and a belief in themselves.
For some people, it took courage, genius and stamina. But for many others, it took nothing special but the desire to turn dreams into reality.
Whether you want millions of dollars, recognition as an artist, or personal freedom, you have the ability to make your life as rich as you want.
Think about what you most desire. It may not be hard cash, but what it can buy. Or it may be those feelings of inner satisfaction, from creating something beautiful or strong.
You may want personal independence from the work week, or freedom to live anywhere you want.
You may be looking for something meaningful and significant in life – something other than things money can buy.
Whatever your goals, and however difficult they seem to be to accomplish, you have the ability to become who you want.
Can you see yourself surrounded by riches? Picture the world open and in front of you, ready to become the form of your dreams, ready to stage your desires. “Why then, the world’s mine oyster,” wrote Shakespeare, “which I with sword will open.”

You can make your life as rich as you want!
