10 business start up tips.

Before we get down to the 10 busines tips, I want to give you some important advice.
Before you start to trade, create a business plan. There are many great business plan templates available on the web, they’re not as difficult as you think.
The plan will tell you from the outset if your business is viable!
It will tell you how much money you will need to earn to make a profit and how much you need to charge for your services. Too many people take the “just think of a figure” approach and then are surprised when they can’t make ends meet.

A business plan is called a business plan because it does just that, it allows you to “plan” by setting yourself targets, targets that will produce the cash flow that you need to grow your business. I look at my business plan nearly every day and when I manage to meet, or even surpass a target I am very proud of myself and my team and I make sure everyone knows it!

Lesson 1.
Choose a business you can be passionate about. If there’s no passion then you won’t enjoy it and your business will probably fail!

Lesson 2.
Don’t make the mistake of trying to attempt to supply everything to everyone. Try to work within a specialist sector and also try to become the best one at it – in other words, beat off the competition.

Lesson 3. Most of your business will come from prospects you have built a relationship with. Get to know them first then sell to them later. I have built up a very tidy contact list from giving away an e-book. I then engage with my list with other goodies many times before I actually sell to them.

Lesson 4.
Don’t undersell yourself. Your prospects need to believe that you have the ability and the expertise to support them.

Lesson 5.
Deliver everything that you have promised. In other words don’t give false hopes to people.

Lesson 6.
If you are looking for people to join your business, perhaps you are a network marketer, don’t make outrageous claims of high earnings just for the sake of it. If you do you will find that people will join you with the wrong motivation in mind. Yes, they want more money but they need also to be entrepreneurs otherwise the line stops there, they’re not going to make any sales and will lose interest.

Lesson 7.
Make sure that you can be seen as a leader, people will join you because of you before they join you because of the company.
You can do this by having a real presence on the web, check out our Image Attraction System E-course. Make sure you have your own website and join some business networks like Spoke and LinkedIn. Pay a lot of attention to your profile page, it’s so important, even on Twitter!

Lesson 8.
There are a lot of people out there who have turned an online businesses into great profit earners but you need to be prepared to work hard.
You need to search out webinars, training videos and recordings even if they are in the middle of the night, (which they quite often are), about your chosen subject.

Lesson 9.
Start with the end in sight, if you don’t know what you want in your future then how can you have a vision, how do you know in what direction to go. I think it was Stephen Covey who said, “When climbing the ladder make sure that it is leaning against the right wall!”

Lesson 10.
Plan a social media strategy and keep to it. If you are going to market your business by using blogs then schedule your posts either daily or weekly. Monthly is too little, weekly is good but daily is better. Check out my other posts on how to market using blog posts on the social networks.

  1. Pat– I like all 10 of your point, but I would like to add an additional point about lesson 1. Make sure your passion can make payroll. Sometime we can be passionate about things that should be a hobby–not a business.

    Continued Success.
